OHARA IKEBANA CLASS

15 JULY

We are extremely excited to offer this half day class, a beginner’s guide to Ohara Ikebana with guest teacher, Ruriko Kojima.

Ruriko is a Master of the Ohara School and has studied and practiced the art of Ikebana for many years, having learned with her mother in Japan. She is a past President of the Ohara School England Chapter and has exhibited at RHS Flower Shows, the Japan House and the Queen’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace.

In this half day class Ruriko will demonstrate and guide you through the making of your own arrangements in two styles: The Rising Form and the Moribana Landscape arrangement.

You will learn how to apply the principles of the Ohara School to create balanced compositions that are naturalistic and feel organic and alive using seasonal materials from the Aesme cutting garden.

Ohara School emphasises the importance of seasonality, the growth processes of plants and the tranquil beauty of natural environments. Its students learn to closely observe the natural world - the way plants grow and behave in their natural habitats, the way they change with the weather, reach for the light, move with the wind.

15 JULY

During the class we will create two thoughtful compositions that evoke the natural world at this specific moment in the summer. The Rising Form is a linear arrangement that celebrates the upright growth of plants reaching for the sun. Using a kenzan (pinholder), careful consideration will be given to the form, angle and direction of each stem to capture a sense of aspiration, strength and resilience. The Moribana Landscape arrangement seeks to distill the magnificence of natural scenery, focussing on depth, perspective and reflections.
