This June we are delighted to host a floral design retreat at Tilton House in the rolling Sussex Downs, drawing inspiration from the painterly interiors, ceramics and walled gardens of neighbouring Charleston Farmhouse. The country home of the Bloomsbury group, Charleston is rife with colour, artistic expression and atmosphere, and the perfect source of inspiration for the flower arranger. The retreat will focus on evoking a sense of place through floral design, of capturing the essence of your environment through the use of colour, form and choice of ingredients. Taking cue from what is in season in the gardens of Charleston we will use an abundance of blowsy June roses, home-grown garden flowers in nuanced colours and wild foraged materials from the surrounding lanes and hedgerows.
On Tuesday an afternoon arrival at Tilton will be followed by a private Curator's Tour of the rooms and gardens at Charleston. We will enjoy tea in the Pottery and then walk back up the lane, taking time to settle into our rooms before informal drinks and a delicious seasonal supper with vegetables from the kitchen garden.
Following a home-cooked breakfast, we will set out on a cross-country walk to Berwick Church to visit the beautiful painted murals of Duncan Grant and Vanessa Bell. On our return we will forage wild flowers and grasses for our arrangements as we go. Back at Tilton, weather permitting, we will enjoy an al fresco courtyard lunch and then spend the afternoon creating wild, romantic centrepiece arrangements in bespoke ceramic vessels under the trees on the lawn. A professional photographer will be on hand to capture atmospheric images of our creations and surroundings throughout the day. We will collectively style the table for a summer feast, and while away an evening of fine company, food and wine, surrounded by flickering candlelight and beautiful flowers.
After breakfast and check-out at Tilton on Thursday, we will congregate in the charming historic market town of Lewes for a morning of antique prop-hunting, visiting a local bakery and browsing local boutiques.
